Joseph Gilderdale was born in 1770. His parents were Robert Gilderdale and Ann Howard of Thorne in Yorkshire. He married Mary Goodwin at Scawby, near Brigg, in Lincolnshire in 1797, but he died the following year leaving an infant daughter, Catherine.
His father had given him a £400 interest in his ship the Walker before he died in 1794, leaving Joseph as sole executor.
It appears that Joseph may have suffered a mental illness before he died.
