James Knight was apprenticed to James Apps, blacksmith of Tonbridge in Kent in 1766. He married Sarah Tunbridge and we know of three children, born in 1778, 1779 and 1784. Tonbridge is north of Tunbridge Wells and 15-20 miles south east of London.
